From a top Margaux estate, Ch Paveil de Luze, this is pretty much everything you'd hope for in a ready-to-drink 2016 Bordeaux. The main estate dates from the 17th Century, but this comes from a nearby vineyard not far from Margaux purchased in 2005. It's a 70/30 Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon blend - normal for AOC Bordeaux - that ages 10 months in French oak - unusual - about 25% of which are new - unheard of at this level! The aromas, flavors, texture and complexity all punch well above this wine's modest price. Bold aromas of red currant, tobacco, raspberry, and spice lead to a ripe, generous, mouthful of red berry, currant, cedar, tobacco and more. The oak adds a lovely spice without getting in the way of 2016's generous fruit which keeps on pumping through a long, classically austere, finish. Drink now - 2024 with increasing pleasure!
